The Bulgarian architectural and engineering company IPA will design the reconstruction of Terminal 2 at the capital's airport. The designers will partner with the foreign company 1PAX - a French architectural office with international experience in airport design, authors of the conceptual design of the terminal, and with consultants from EGIS Avia - a world leader in the design and engineering of airports and aviation infrastructure.
The agreement between the parties was signed a few days ago by the airport executive director Jesus Caballero and arch. Tsvetan Petrov, managing director.
The strategy for Sofia Airport transformation includes the complete reconstruction of Terminal 2, which will take over the traffic of the nearly 70-year-old Terminal 1. The project consists of the delivery of a completely new baggage handling system, doubling the capacity of the flight check-in counters, and a complete reconstruction of the areas for checking hand luggage and border control, a brand modern duty-free shopping area on an area of almost 2000 sq.m., a revolutionary design concept for food storage, installation of additional sleeves for boarding airplanes and a number of other improvements to ensure additional comfort for passengers and efficiency of operations. A completely new Terminal 3 will be constructed by 2030, offering passengers convenience and comfort.
"When planning and designing, several vital factors will lead us - to create an excellent experience for passengers at the airport, a welcoming atmosphere, a comfortable environment, and of course - safety. The renovated airport will give another face to the city and its infrastructure, installations, and technologies will meet modern quality and sustainability criteria. We believe the renovated airport will provide first-class and affordable service for everyone. - said arch. Tsvetan Petrov.
"I am taking a significant step forward with transforming Terminal 2. The building has its potential, which will allow us to improve our clients' amenities and be more effective in our operations. We count on the IPA to project a friendly environment, with satisfied passengers and friendly employees in compliance with all administrative procedures. This is said Jesus Caballero, chief executive officer of the airport when signing the agreement.
